Ask For Help And You Shall Receive It: Following on from my recent article regarding Angels the following is loosely connected to it. I had decided to take my dogs for a walk to clear my head as much to give them the exercise they needed. I took my usual walk to the top of my road, took a left and stopped at their favourite stop.
***
It was within a few yards of the local bus stop where a patch of grass leading to a tall tree was and where they always head for on our walks. I looked around as the dogs did their daily constitutionals, I noticed an elderly woman looking towards me.
***
She was at the bus stop. I naturally assumed she was merely looking down the road beyond me waiting for the bus to arrive. I did my civic duty and tidied the dog’s business in an appropriate biodegradable bag. It was then that I realised the woman was looking at me and trying to get my attention.
***
I walked towards her as she stepped away from the bus stop and asked me for some help. I gladly stopped to help in any which way I could. She asked if I knew if the buses that stopped at the bus stop, she was standing at, went in a particular direction. I explained that it did not, and she was quite some distance away from the nearest bus route she needed to be on.
***
I decided to take her back towards the local hospital and point her in the right direction, so I replied follow me I will show you the right direction. We headed up towards the traffic lights crossed over to the other side of the road and back towards the entrance of the local hospital. It transpired that she had been at the hospital for an appointment but couldn’t find a taxi to take her home and somehow found her way to the bus stop near my walking route.
***
I gleaned from her that she was in her late 80’s and had an appointment for a scan that morning and was heading back home to her elderly brother whom she cared for.
***
As we stood waiting to cross the hospital main entrance, I realised that the nearest bus stop she needed to get to would be a lot further than I realised. The route would require walking the full length of the hospital grounds. Go under an underpass then follow a side road towards the 68 and 61 bus routes. This works out to be roughly 0.7 of a mile, a 17-minute walk with two main roads to navigate with various other bus stops that are dotted around, none of which go in the direction she needs to be heading.
***
For whatever reason I asked her if she believed in Angels which she smiled but didn’t respond. I said to her some people believe in Angels whilst others just believe in random acts of kindness goes a long way especially when you need it the most. If you ask for help it will happen. I then explained I was going to take her to the bus stop myself as I didn’t want her to get lost.
***

Asking for help can turn a dark place into a light place.
***
She politely asked me if I was sure, but I knew it was the right thing to do, and I explained I wouldn’t want her to be lost somewhere and be late arriving home to her brother. Besides, she had another appointment at another hospital that afternoon to attend.
***
I could have easily just pointed in the general direction, but I was never going to let her try and find the bus stop by herself.
***
Eventually we found our way to the correct bus stop. I asked her name which she gave and I in turn told her my name and wished her well on the rest of her journey.
***
I recall this to highlight the fact that if we are in need for help, we should never be afraid to ask. In turn if someone asks for help don’t be afraid to help those in need. A random act of kindness is a spontaneous, unplanned act of goodness performed to help others without expecting anything in return. If a random act of kindness can be acted upon surely the world will be a better place for it.
***
All I lost was a few minutes of my time and good Karma no doubt was created in return. Will the elderly woman think I was an Angel probably not, but I could tell she was grateful for a random act of kindness from a total stranger she stopped that morning.
